Agarita (Mahonia trifoliolata)
Agarita is an evergreen shrub 4-6 feet tall and wide, with beautiful gray-green, holly-like foliage and clusters of fragrant yellow flowers from February through April. Birds (including song birds) and small mammals love the fruit which also makes a delicious jelly. The leaves are very sharp so plant away from traffic areas. It makes a good screening plant. Grow it in sun or part shade and give it good drainage. Agarita is considered a good honey source.
