Standing Cypress is a tall, upright biennial. It produces a ferny rosette the first year that is followed by a flower spike the second year. It attracts hummingbirds and depends on them for pollination. Hummingbirds also help control the insect population.
Standing Cypress produces showy, red, tubular flowers. The flower spikes can be anywhere from two feet tall to more than five feet in wet springs. Removing spent flower spikes can encourage forming of new flowering stalks. It requires a dry, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. The plants are highly popular as cut flowers. After blooming, Standing Cypress reseeds readily providing years of seasonal color.
